Hello.
Which login manager is appropriate for ppc?
kdm is masked with ~ppc. Even if I overwrite it with keyword ppc, there are coming lots of other masked relationships.
I am new to gentoo and ppc. Right now I got a basic gentoo running and I am able to do startkde.
How should I start a graphical login manager after boot? I emerged gdm but there is no init scriipt to put into runlevel.

The init script is
/etc/init.d/xdm

Make sure to edit the value of DISPLAYMANAGER in
/etc/rc.conf

before kde-3.4, there were no individual ebuilds, only the monolithic packages. kdm is part of kdebase, which is marked stable for ppc as well (at least version 3.3.2-r1) so you should emerge this one if you want the stable packages.

Hi,

I am using gdm ( Gnome Display Manager ), if you want to use it do this:

Code:

emerge gdm

After GDM is emerged
Code:

rc-update add xdm default

After that you must edit the /etc/rc.conf to enable gdm as default Login Manager
Code:

nano -w /etc/rc.conf

and find the line named "DISPLAYMANAGER" and than enable GDM on it:

Code:

DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"

and restart X by typing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and you are in.

if you still have problems with Gentoo in PPC, or GDM doesent start yet i want you to post it here ;).

To use KDM you must emerge the whole KDE packages:

Code:

emerge kde

when KDE is emerged you must edit the DISPLAYMANGER line in /etc/rc.conf and add:

Code:

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

and restart X by typing CTRL + ALT+BACKSPACE

I prefer Entrance (from E17), although it's still masked...

I like Entrance but I've noticed a few wierd things happening when i've tried it.. for example X sometimes crashes during emerges and system services have difficulty closing down, so I'm waiting for it to get a little more stable. I generally just use xdm cos it's pretty rock solid and doesn't depend on KDE or GNOME in any way. I've worked very hard to keep my system totally free of any KDE or GNOME components.. I'm waiting for E17 to be released, stable and production ready, then I'll use that. I find KDE and GNOME to be too bloated and far to Winblows like for my tastes...
