I have done many installations for Gentoo from the iso 2004.1 and 2004.2 CDs, the kernel compilation was never an issue, probably because I did not change so much form the default settings.

Now with the 2005.0 iso manual Kernel compilation failes always at the same step:
net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_fw_compat.o
"to few arguments to ip_ct_gather_frags"
So it stops. I have no clue (and no network either) what it means. Any idea?

Genkernel makes a kernel (I got it running despite the handbook!), and places all into /boot. Since I can`t get yaboot to start I do not know whether it is functional, but that is a different story.

Any hint is appreciated.

I never playied with genkernel, so others may inform you better than me, but i believe there is an option for genkernel to display the kernel config; then just go to device-drivers -> networking -> and disable all that stuff you dont need ;)

hope that helps

cheers

So i played with genkernel before, but i know how genkernel works, so to run Make Menuconfig from genkernel type this:

Code:

genkernel --menuconfig all

and enable what you want, when you exit and save changes to .config and genkernel start his work ;).

Thanks for the hint, which I definitely will try. But that does not explain why the manual compilation fails at thea IPV4 step. Is something missing in the initial compressed kernel tar file?

I don't really know what happens in there, but I have a possible workaround. The compilaion seems to choke at the ipfwadm support (CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPFWADM), so why not disable it? I am not aware of any useful application that requires it. While you are at it, you may also want to disable the ipchains support (CONFIG_IP_NF_COMPAT_IPCHAINS), applications have moved towards iptables anyway. It might be possible that you want ipchains support, but you surely don't need ipfwadm (I suspect that this code is no longer maintained actively, hence the breakage).

If you are using menus to configure the kernel these two options are in Device Drivers -> Networking support -> Networking options -> Network packet filtering (replaces ipchains) -> IP: Netfilter Configuration (at the very end).

Thanks for the hint, that was it. I just wonder why nobody except for me had this problem?

Probably because nobody is using ipfwadm anymore. As I said, I suspect the respective code is no longer actively maintained.

It was activated by default. Nevertheless, I have done at least 4 re-installs meanwhile, your hint has always worked. But still no fun. Something goes wrong with the file system, I suspect. Yabootconfig is unable to detect /boot/kernel-blabla and so does yaboot after reboot. Everything is there, in fstab, yaboot.conf checked 1000 times, but the root partitition is not recognised. During install no problems at all! Lets see.

Well, I just got exactly the same error while compiling the kernel. I couldn't solve it, so i
switched to vanilla-sources, which compiled without problem.

I am installing Gentoo on an iBook G4 with the universal 2005.0 ppc cd and got this error also. 8O In the default kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r8 that is on the cd the option that makes it hang can be found here:

Device Drivers --->
Networking support --->
Networking options --->
Network packet filtering (replaces ipchains) --->
IP: Netfilter Configuration --->
< > ipchains (2.2-style) support

This is the next to last thing in the list. By defalut there is a <M> there... get rid of it and you get rid of the problem.

Thanks everyone for helping me find this! :D
