Regardless of what i try, when i launch X I get severe flickering and line movement - sometimes i can just make out an X cursor, however most of the time, not...

I have not been able to find any docs on installing Xorg on a 17" PB.

You have to either look in the booklet that came with your powerbook or search for your exact model on the internet for "horizontal and vertical frequency sync ranges" (or any similar words, these are two ranges, each have a mininum and maximum). These ranges are asked when configuring X, so if you can type in the exact range for your monitor, you will have the best results.

Or... try to configure X with Xautoconf:

Code:

emerge Xautoconf

Then run Xautoconf

Code:

Xautoconf

Then try to startx

Code:

startx

I am thinking this may help you to autoconfigure Xorg :).

If you're feeling adventurous, you can try the latest version of Xautoconfig which has been modified for Xorg. Xorgautoconfig. :)

See bug #84468: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84468. You'll need to unpack the archive and run make, but I'd be thrilled to get any feedback. This version will be the one that we include on our LiveDVD, so the more testing it gets now, the better that will be!

Thanks!

Xorgautoconfig reads the frequencies from your framebuffer device which is set up on boot. You don't need the frequencies if you use one of these tools.
