I am new to Gentoo and linux. I have always been using windows. What is the difference between KDE and Gnome? Which one shall I install? Which one is easier to install and use?

Thanks.

lol i this has been already been disscussed to death...to the point that people got hurt hehehe

just try both of them, they are both great desktop enviroments...

i prefer KDE because of its kio_slaves, looks, speed, and programs feels more integrated, etc...but this is only my point of view. I also use gnome at work and its great too but i just prefer KDE, like i said dont be afraid to try both of them since gentoo make us very easy, simply type

emerge kde or gnome and youre done!

To give you some perspective, your question is the linux equivalent of walking into a room full of religious people, and asking which is better, Christanity or Islam.

So the answer is pretty simple here... Gnome and Islam both suck. Only way to go is deep chritianity and a KDE desktop. You can't go wrong. Alleluia!

Neither! Use enlightenment!

Seriously though, try Gnome, KDE, and XFCE. Then try running just a window manager instead of a full desktop environment. I would recommend at least trying fluxbox, and enlightenment DR16 (DR17 is too far from being finished), but there are several other choices you may want to try as well.

After you've tried a variety of environments you'll be ready to pick the one that suits your needs and preferences better.

Why do I need religion to choose what is right and what is wrong?

I really like KDE. But it does take a looong time to compile. If you have a smaller or older system then you might want to try something like fluxbox first which is much smaller and a little faster.

KDE is said to be more like Windows than the other DE's. If you want to try it without compiling you could try one of the liveCDs such as Knoppix or Kubuntu.

ontopic: I use GNOME, I prefer it over KDE, but it's really a personal choice... just try some and see which you like best :)

Now that's my YMMD-post for today! :)

But instead of giving any further "advise" OT I suggest this whole thread be moved to OTW and let's give the OP some help in using the search button!
