I've searched around the forums and the web, but can't seem to find a solution. I have a 15" G4 Powerbook that is about a year old. I've downloaded and burnt the PPC LiveDVD twice - once on the Mac and using Disk Utility and once on a Windows box using Roxio. Basically, whether I use the Startup Disk menu or I hold down ALT at bootup I don't see the DVD as an option to boot from. I am going to try the d/l and burn again, this time using gentoo and k3b, but does anybody know where I might be going wrong? I've tried holding down 'c' at boot too, and then I just end up in OS X. I was really hoping to get gentoo on my PB soon, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you put an openfirmware password on your computer? That will prevent things like the 'c' key from working on boot.

Your other option is to try booting into open firmware (hold option+command+o+f on boot) and then at the prompt type:

Code:
boot cd:,\\:tbxi

If you mean that XLiveDVD for ppc, which was shown in current GWN, then you just cannot boot that on a powerbook :(

There is only a pegasos ppc kernel on that live cd. Useless for all other ppc machines. pvadabeel should have mentioned that on his website and it also should be mentioned in the GWN.

Best regards,

Markus

Quote from pvadabeel's website:

Quote:

Apple machines with ATI radeon DRI-enabled video cards, a monitor capable of 800x600 and 1024x768 and Alsa sound support can be made to boot this LiveDVD given some effort. DRI detection still needs some work on Apple machines.

So it should be possible. The trick is to figure out how. I guess it may invlove getting into open firmware and having a play. I don't know much about OF, but the point is it should be possible.
Need to boot live dvd!

As far as I know, yaboot is not included on the CD. In order to boot this thing on an Apple machine, you'll need to provide it a boot partition that yaboot can boot from along with the kernel that he used for this setup. You could probably boot it most easily if you already have linux installed, but it's not going to be easy otherwise.

If you want to try it and let us know, good luck!

The Gentoo PPC team have been working on the tools we'd need for a LiveDVD/LiveCD release, but they're not really ready yet. When they're done, we'll release something that everyone can use.

yeah yaboot isn't on the DVD. I've got Gentoo on my iBook, with a boot partition which has yaboot on there. What would i need to do, add an entry into my yaboot.conf? I guess i need to specify the kernel, what is the kernel he used for the DVD? there only seem to be two files on the DVD, live.data and live (i think i'm remembering that right, i don't have the dvd with me right now).
Or are we talking copying the contents of the DVD to hard drive and booting from there?
I'll definitely have a play. I'll start by trying what i said above. If that's not even close to what i need to do, i'd appreciate a pointer or two!
Thanks JoseJX :-)

No promises here, I don't have a copy of the DVD but your best bet would be to find the kernel that the DVD uses (perhaps it's the live file, try the file utility to see what the file is). The live.data is probably a squashfs filesystem, take a look at our regular PPC CDs for how to boot into it.

You'll probably need to add something like this to the yaboot.conf image section for this kernel:
append= "cdroot init=linuxrc loop=live.data looptype=squashfs"
root=/dev/ram0

But again, just so it's clear: I've not used the DVD and am just speaking from how we get the PPC install CDs to boot.
Good luck! :)

ok, i think i managed to create an unreadable dvd. :-( I don't have a dvd burner, so i did it very quickly at a friends. And i had to use windows to do it. I can't mount the damn thing! Very annoying, and i won't be able to burn another for a few days. But i WILL get this thing to work.
