I wonder if there is a way to specify the priority in which emerge --syn or emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=dev-util/cvs-1.11.20" for example will run at the priority I specify without me manually renice(ing) the job.

Whenever I run emerge on a server, I have to do it over the weekends or nights, so the users won't complain about the overload. I would like to tell emerge to run at the priority I specify. Maybe /etc/portage/portage.conf (?)

Is there such a thing?

Code:

man nice

Then write a 3-line script sync.sh that calls nice and call the script instead.

Or, to renice all operations ( not only sync ), instead of emerge, call:

Code:

#! /bin/sh

nice -n 20 emerge $@

Code:
man make.conf

Look for PORTAGE_NICENESS.

This is great thanks.

I notice that fixpackages won't use the PORTAGE_NICENESS though.
