EDIT... Sorry for the first post in french but someone in the french forum told me to try to post here because it were PPC related ... I'll will try to do my best to translate the post in english:

I have with me a PowerBook 3400c (an oldworld)...
As I found that the 603e's were no more supported by the gentoo livecd's since 2004.0, I had to look back to the old 1.4 revision... but now, I got some problems...One of them were that there is no more documentation for this version (overall documentation and installation guides) and the second, is that even with a certain documentation of other sources like this one: http://www.rockhopper.dk/linux/powerbook/gentoo-install.html, the only thing I'm able to do from this version of Gentoo is a busybox prompt with something like ... NOTHING on it lol ... bash is not loaded (only ash) and commands like "ls,mount,cd" works... I think that the livecd is unable to mount his /cloop device (something like that as I dont remember well)...

What more can I do ? Is somebody here able to give me the old documentation? or any place on the net to look for it !?

Thank you very much

====OLD FRENCH VERSION====

Merci Beaucoup

I don't think your gonna post in french in this forum. You have own forum for french:)
Even though your problem is PPC related, it is suppost to be posted in english so everyone can respond to you.

I am not sure about the meaning of `busybox prompt,' but I am going to assume that it is the CD prompt. If this is the case, then the installation should go like the one for the newer versions, so you can use the usual handbook. Indeed, in the process of syncing and compiling things you will effectively upgrade to the most recent version anyway. Just make sure you download and use a recent set of binary packages, because otherwise you will end up compiling from sources almost everything.

If the `busybox prompt' has other meaning then I am completely off with my advice, case in which it would be useful to be a bit more detailed about what you did to obtain the said prompt. The main point remians though, once you booted the machine successfully you should be mostly fine by following the normal handbook advice.

I edited the first post to put it in english ... And to answer your question bruda, the prompt that i get is far to be like the livecd prompt that i get from newer versions (since busybox is a verry limited shell)...

To obtain de said prompt ... I installed MacOS 7.6 on the PowerBook along with BootX and booted almost like it is described here : http://www.rockhopper.dk/linux/powerbook/gentoo-install.html#chap1

But the only difference is that the kernel images had different names...

after that .. I pressed The linux Button, and then after the kernel loaded, paf to busybox ! ...

I installed Debian on it .. but .. Im a gentooist .. not a debianist lol .. I just dont like Debian...

Sorry if my english is bad but I try to do my best !!!

Again, thanks

dont you see any error before you get stalled in the minimal console ???
I really have no idea what the problem could be, try to boot with several kernel parameters, disabling some stuff ... maybe youre loading something the box does not like.

hope that helps a bit

cheers

The 2005.0 CD should work, please see the latest handbook for the correct instructions for booting with LiveCD: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml?part=1&chap=2

Let us know if that doesn't work, you may need a modified kernel.

It *should* work, but there are some cases where it won't. Let me know if it doesn't work and we'll figure out how to get it running.

It looks like the bus or chipset that your CD drive is on isn't built into the kernel. I'm unsure as to what kind of device it is, but if you find this out, I can either make a new kernel for you or help you figure out what to do next. I'll be away until the 4th, so if I don't respond before then, that's why. :)

what do i need to do to know the bus or chipset that my CD drive is on?

lspci ? with the bootdisks of Debian of course...

thanks a lot ... (the only problem is that debian is unable to do anything with the cd-drive and also, the cd-drive is swappable (to insert a floppy disk...) also; http://www.rockhopper.dk/linux/powerbook/powerbook3400.html is a good way to know some info about my powerbook (as the guy on the website says, his version of gentoo worked flawlessly)

I hope this helps

Unless you can figure out what the conroller chipset for the CD Drive is, I'm not sure I can help. The link you provided doesn't give any indication of how the CD drive is attached. Is it SCSI? Find this information out and I'll build you a new kernel...

Remember that the debian boot disks are unable to get the cdrom working though...
