Ok so I have seen alot of enthusiasm toward ubuntu. So I tried it out, installed it on a junk machine and I dont see what makes it so wonderful. Easy install and in my opinion it was like red hat in brown. Whats all the hype about? Whats its package managment system? I just dont get it.

And you ask this here in a Gentoo Linux forum?

Ubuntu and Kubuntu is nothing else then Debian + tweaks + other small stuff.

cheers

Its package manager is apt, with a GUI wrapper, which makes it easy to use but with the power of Debian. Also, it's got a whole host of things that pretty much work out of the box.

At the same time, it's trivial to change the repositories to Debian, and customize it. I guess it's the easy basic system + customizability that makes it so popular. :)

I tried it in vmware, and during the whole installation I kept thinking "I didn't ask for that program! ...oh yeah"

It seems like a great distro for those who don't want to muck around in config files, but, of course, we're not those type of people :D

I dunno I quite like it, I carry their liveCD in my workbag for those emugency cases (although thinking abt making my own one via catylist)

For ppl that want to jump onto teh Linux bandwagon (and are shite with computers) I still recomend Mandrake
But for ppl that actually want to give it a go I point them Ubuntu way - with teh mention of Gentoo as well
