Hello,
I used the root account to setup my system and my desktop environment (yes, i know that this is silly). Yesterday I copied the home dirrectory of the superuser "root" into the home directory of the user "christoph". Then I changed the permissions of the copied files. Well, my problem is that when I issue the "su" command when logged in as "christoph" to become a superuser to do some administrative tasks, no matter if I do this on the console or under the X window system using a terminal emulator like xterm, I can't become "root". su says that the password supplied is wrong. The strange thing is, that I can login to the root account on the console without any problems.

I have absolutely no clue what is wrong.

Code:

sh-2.05b$ su
Password:
su: Permission denied
Sorry.
sh-2.05b$

/var/log/messages says:
Code:

su[9469] pam_authenticate: permission denied

Thanks in advance,
ennservogt

It sounds to me like that user isn't in the wheel group, what does
Code:
 more /etc/group |grep wheel
return? if your user isn't in there you can add it by doing
Code:
gpasswd -M christoph wheel

I believe you have to add the other groups along with wheel, but im not sure.

Thank you very much guys!
I have searched for a solution in the internet and in this forum, but I didn't find a hint. Maybe I have just searched for the wrong terms.
The user christoph was not in the wheel group and thus was not allowed to su.

Moving to dups.

@ennservogt: searching for terms with less than three characters (like su) is not possible.
