Well I think you could already delete every file in /usr/portage/distfiles.
These are the files you fetch when you run the 'emerge' command :)

Then the files in /usr/tmp/portage and it will be ok :) (I got nearly 1,5Go free last time I clean these)

Maybe others files could be deleted but these are (I think :)) safe !

The only two I can think of (apart from a clearout of home) are /usr/portage/distfiles (contains downloaded package files used in emerge, they'll just get redownloaded if needed) and there may be quite a few extra kernel source trees in /usr/src that you don't need (make sure you leave the one linked to /usr/src/linux, and that this is the one you're running for ideal setup).

You can safely delete /var/tmp/portage and /var/tmp/portage-pkg.

and you can delete /usr/portage/distfiles if you are really short on disk space. but be aware, that when ever you want to re-emerge something you will have to download it again!

/tmp is also a place you can look at, but only delete files in there, while you are in runlevel 1, so you don't accidently delete files of a running process.

You can delete the CONTENTS (not the dir itself), and please keep the ".keep" files.

    /var/tmp/portage
    /usr/portage/distfiles

I suppose you already cleaned up "/tmp/ too. Old outdated kernel sources are a source of wasted diskspace too

Please search or browse the FAQ Forum. There is a thread on diskspace.
