Hello,

I'm not a newabie on linux or on gentoo, but today I felt like that.

When I started my computer this morning I got this after the boot menu from grub:
Quote:
Booting 'Gentoo - 2.6.11 r4'

kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz2.6.11-gentoo-r4 root=0307 noapic acpi=off vga=794
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1600, size=0x249985]

Error 15: File not found

Booting with the Live-CD 2005.0 or 2004.3 all seems to be normal ( /boot, fdisk -l, /dev)
But after chrooting neither fdisk sees my disks nor /dev sees more than /dev/null.

On this box I'm still using devfs. This installation is very old, iirc gentoo v 1.4, but doesn't matter it's gentoo.
Booting older kernels failed also. I've got a kernel 'history' on /boot.

My idea is emerge changed from devfs to udev and I don't mention it and now the kernel can't see any devices. But why fails grub?

I've not changed my hardware, winsel starts on this disk, I've not emerge new software. The only thing I remember is a
Quote:
emerge -uDva world

last time I used gentoo. Normaly I emerge once a week. My last emerge were on Sunday.

I remember the last emerge which emerge grub 0.96-r1. So I switched bask to grub-0.94-1.

There's the rub!

I just post this for others with ran in the same problem.

Kris
