Since it's very hard to resist I'm thinking of a couple of excuses to buy a mac mini.

My primary excuse would be installing gentoo & 2.6 kernel and using it as a gateway, fileserver, dns, webserver - not really that difficult to setup right?

Also I'd like to have some external (maxtor) firewire drives connected to it (in a software raid-5), is the mac mini firewire supported well enough for this?

Final question, there are a couple of (non-gentoo) mac's in my network and I would like to use something different than samba for my gentoo fileserver, since there are no windows systems here. What should use?

I use nfs, its works fine if you put "insecure" in your /etc/exports on the rows where you have your macs.

This week I set up a mac mini as a Linux file server with hot-swap external disks.

I found that the firewire on my enclosure was not very reliable, sometimes the drives would show up, usually not. I purchased a USB 2.0 hub and I'm using USB for the external drives instead. This always works, and hot-swap works great with USB. Very reliable.

As this is a personal server, I don't care over-much about performance, and it seems to work.

In general, I have not been happy with Linux and Firewire since kernel 2.4.19 -- but YMMV.

I have a sparc gentoo machine with a 180GB RAID5 volume shared via NFS. Speed is great between other linux boxes, solaris machines, win boxes running "Unix services", and to OS9 boxes running 3rd party NFS software. It just crawls on the OSX machines though. Have you noticed this? Is there something that can be changed on either the OSX or server end?

I reverted to using netatalk on the sparc server just to get the thoroughput back.

Or use the -P option on the OSX machines when mounting. Either way works, but I prefer the NFS server not listening to requests from insecure ports.
Code:

mount -o -P linuxserver:/directory /local/directory

I only have a 10Mbit card on my linux-nfs-server, and both my linux and my OSX computer max that without problems ;)
