Ok... so I am trying to install Linux on my work travel laptop. It is a 12" Pentium M laptop that has no built in cdrom.

Anyway, I run Gentoo on my servers and desktops and have been for about 2 years now. I've installed the thing so many times I don't even need to read the handbook anymore...

So I plugged in the cdrom drive via usb and booted off my trusty Gentoo 2005.0 CD. Worked just find and I was in the middle of bootstrapping when the laptop died because... alas, I forgot to plug it in to the wall...

Ever since then I haven't been able to get the thing to boot of the CD. It always says there is no root device, and /newroot/dev/sr0 doesn't seam to be working as it did the first time I booted off the CD.

I'm stumped... is there is any way to force the kernel to use a static dev or something like that so I don't have to rely in udev and hotplug to pick up the cdrom since it obviously isn't working so reliably
