the gnome project was started by some developers broke awayfrom kde project because of some disagreement in kde licensing policy, ok! so why did they choose to go backward in technology by choosing the procedural paradigm instead of the object oriented? 8O

they had already been working on an OO based kde project 8O

Wait, i thought Gnome was OO?
Gnome = GNU Network Object Model Environment

Or are you talking about something I don't know about?

Although i've never heard that acronym... i'm pretty certain that Gnome is coded in C and KDE in C++...

Object orientation isn't the be all and end all of programming.

I highly doubt the architectural decisions about GNOME were explicitly about object orientation.

They didn't. glib provides an object model within the limits of C, though it of course doesn't support the syntactic sugar of C++. Not a choice I would have made, but there it is. GNOMEnclature: Getting ready for GNOME 2, Part 2 by Daniel Robbins addresses this.
