I recently got a (slightly newer) pismo to replace my (slightly older) lombard, and I've been trying to get direct rendering working. /var/log/Xorg.0.log says:
Quote:
(II) R128(0): Direct rendering enabled

however glxinfo says there is no direct rendering and I get only ~100fps from glxgears.
I have everything configured as per this post (16bpp depth, DRI section etc).
the only related warnings/errors from xorg are (again from the log):
Quote:
(WW) R128(0): Video BIOS not detected in PCI space!
(WW) R128(0): Attempting to read Video BIOS from legacy ISA space!
(WW) R128(0): Video BIOS not found!

which are alleged to be normal warnings for the pismo.
My kernel version is 2.6.10-gentoo-r8, and I'm using xorg 6.8.2 (r2, which I unmasked when r1 gave me the same problem).
Anyway, it's been making me a little nuts, and any help would be appreciated,
thanks,
Ryan

I also have a Pismo (400) but DRI is working fine. I also get these errors:

# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep "BIOS"
Code:
(II) R128(0): No legacy BIOS found -- trying PCI
(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)
(WW) R128(0): Video BIOS not detected in PCI space!
(WW) R128(0): Attempting to read Video BIOS from legacy ISA space!
(WW) R128(0): Video BIOS not found!

glxgears gives me around 470-480 fps and glxinfo says:
Code:
direct rendering: Yes

Xorg seem's to be loading the r128 as a module on mine so that's probably how I set it up. The agpgart part was most definitely built-in though.
Here's my xorg.conf file for the PowerBook G3 Pismo.
Here's my kernel (2.6.10-r8) config for the PowerBook G3 Pismo.

I've tried your kernel config on kernel-2.6.10-r8, and your xorg.conf with no luck. There is a bug related to r128 on x86 platforms with xorg-6.8.2-r1, so I was wondering which version you're using.
I'm going to try xorg-6.8.2-r2 again with your configs in the mean time

Strange - I'm running xorg-x11 6.8.2-r1.

tried 6.8.2-r2, no better. I'm using my lombard hard-drive in the pismo, so this problem could be a result of obscure out-dated configs or something of that nature; as an upshot I'm re-installing gentoo from scratch.
If this doesn't work I'll assume it is a hardware problem of some sort, so I probably won't be asking anymore questions.
Thanks for the help,
ryan

did the clean install, used GRP xorg-x11 with gentoo kernel 2.6.10-r6, now direct rendering works. Don't know what the problem was exactly, but guess it's resolved now.
