Hello!

I'm considering installing a Gentoo system on my G5 Single 1.8 (ATI Radeon 9600XT).

I would like to know if there are hardware incompatibilities and if all my peripherals (USB 2, Firewire, sound, GC...) will work like on MacOS X.

Also, I know that when I'm booting a CD other than MacOS X, the fans automaticaly go faster and faster. Is it going to happen during the Gentoo installation process ? If yes, is it possible to slow down the fans during the installation?

Thank you for your answers.

Nicolas.

I have pretty much the same setup as you (only with a dual DP). I installed Gentoo but I had to use an unstable kernel to get better support for the G5. I'm currently using a mm-sources for the kernel (version is 2.6.12-rc3-mm3). Works pretty good so far and thermal support works.

Configuring X is a bit of a pain. Make sure you use radeonfb as you framebuffer device and you should be ok.

I have pretty much the same computer. With the latest live CDs, the fans will not go up (though in gentoo, they tend to be a bit less quiet than in OS X, but not significantly). Sound is not really supported yet, but there's hope that it will be there soon. Firewire: depends on what you want to do with it. Firewire itself is supported, but if you want to use it to connect a scanner or camera or ..., you might be out of luck. Expect to spend some time to get your peripherals working, it's not like OS X where basically everything is automatic.

Good luck!
