I'm attempting to install Gentoo on a Beige G3 that doesn't have an OS on the harddrive.

When I hold down C or Cmd+Opt+Shift+Del to try to boot from the CD, I think I hear the HD spin up, the CD lock down, but I don't hear the CD spin up. It results in the floppy with the ? on it.

My friend told me before that when his G3 had OSX on it before that the CDROM spinup at the beginning of a boot was hit or miss. Does anyone know about a spin up problem for CDROMs on Beige G3s and perhaps a work around for a Gentoo install?

Can you check if the same thing is happening when you put in an OSX disk for example? Can be either hardware or corrupted data on cd issue :-/

Beige G3's are Old World Macs, you'll need to follow the Old World directions for booting on these machines. If the G3G4 kernel provided on the CD doesn't work for you, there is a work-around kernel that I've provided here on the forums.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info Jose - didn't know beige G3s were old world :)

A new problem though, and I'm not sure if it belongs here because this is mac hardware related.

I'm trying to install OSX on the G3 so I can use the oldworld install, but the install CD doesn't recognize the harddrive. I'm thinking that perhaps the harddisk got set to slave somehow after I formatted OSX from it a week ago. I reset PRAM and NVRAM and boot up and still no recognized harddisk. I hear the HD spin for a second, spin down, then spin up again a few seconds later. It keeps this cycle up until poweroff while the floppy with the ? on it flashes.

Any recommendations? Do you think the harddisk became corrupt somehow when I formatted it?

The hard disk probably doesnt have an Apple partition table, you are gonna have to use an OS9 or OS8 cd.

OS X is really quite huge, and I don't think by default it will install to an OldWorld mac. You will have much better progress with an OS9 cd, I have it installed on a 10Gig IDE disk, and the os9 partition and install is about 300 megs. That leaves a lot of room for Gentoo.

Good luck!
