When I try to emerge kde I get the following error:

!!! ERROR: media-libs/jpeg-6b-r4 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 44, Exitcode 2
!!! make failed

Not sure what this means, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Always try to post more lines than just the last error message.

Have you checked bugzilla?

As far as I can see those files it can't find are part of glibc. Don't know how come you don't have them, but I suggest you remerge glibc and see if that fixes things.

Did you try a rebuild of the toolchain, not just glibc ? It may help :

Code:
emerge linux-headers glibc binutils gcc glibc binutils gcc
