I've been trying to install Gentoo for the past couple of days now and I'm following the handbook as closely as I can. I'm trying to install off of a CD. I've searched the forums but I haven't found anything of a similar problem so here goes. I keep running into the problem of running out of disk space when I try to extract the .bz2 file.
I'm reffering to the:
Code:
# tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-<subarch>-2005.0.tar.bz2

command

everything goes hunky dory for awhile then it stops citing a lack of space as the problem. This seems highly unlikely to me because according to fdisk the disk /dev/hda is 19.2 GB big. That's more than enough.

I don't know what to do I've tried it several times and I get the same problem everytime.

thanks so much in advance.

:-) You're trying to unpack something to your cdrom drive as it seems from that line you posted. Try tar -xvjpf myfile.tar -C /wherever/you/want/that/to/be/unpacked

Search again. Abovementioned threads are just a few of the results you get searching for the following: space extract stage tar

Right. Once you've changed to your /mnt/gentoo directory, then you can download and untar the stage. It is supposed to reside in the /mnt/gentoo directory, as the tarball files are meant to be extracted here--anywhere else, and I imagine that you might have installation problems later on. Just follow the 2005.0 Handbook as it's written, and you should be fine.

Trying to untar files to--as opposed to from--the LiveCD just won't work. ;)

I did exactly:
Code:
 tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-x86-2005.0.tar.bz2 -C /mnt/gentoo

and I got the same result. It runs for a minute then halts at a certain file and never goes any farther.

Did you check the integrity of the downloaded ISO? I mean, you didn't get any md5sum errors, did you? You might want to try downloading, verifying, and burning a new CD to see if the error is repeatable.

Or at least first just copy the file directly to /mnt/gentoo:
Code:
cp /path/to/tarball/tarball_name /mnt/gentoo/tarball_name

THEN try running tar, with and/or without the -v option; there are some architectures that cannot use the -v option.

at the time I posted I didn't refresh window so I didn't see any of the new replies. I am currently now reading all those threads. Thank you.

oh and I was searching for things like "out of space" "No space left on device" etc. etc. I didn't include anything about tar in my search. So sorry for being inept at searching  .

EDIT---- Got it to work.

Sorry for making a useless thread. Thank you for replying so quickly

<------ noob

Moved from Installing Gentoo. You may find the following threads helpful to better master the phpbb search function.
