Hi all,
at the third try I've found a wireless device working on my laptop(alubook 15"), I announce it in the hope it can be useful for someone.
It's a WyAIR G-220, a usb device working at 54Mbps based on zd1211 chipset, the driver is in the portage(still masked), btw the sf homepage is http://sourceforge.net/projects/zd1211.
I haven't tested it a lot, but seems to work with linux-2.6.9, not with linux-2.6.12-rc4.
There was just a problem with the device creation, I have done this:

Code:
ln -s /sys/devices/pci0001\:10/0001\:10\:1b.2/usb4/4-1/4-1\:1.0 /dev/wlan0

Now I'm happy to use a wireless on linux, but there's no driver for macosx(and no, I don't have AE): I had to play call of duty with my friends in different rooms! :P
I'm thinking to port/rewrite the driver to osx, there's someone interested in developing?

Hi, Dario.

That's great! Been wondering about wireless in ppc gentoo for a while. My whole campus has a wireless network. Guess i'll be making use of that now :-) Know a site anywhere that i can get this from?
Thanks for the post tomasino.
I'd love to help with a port, I severely doubt my ability to write drivers though! I've not done any low-level coding like that.

could you be more specific about "does not work with 2.6.12-rc4"? i tried testing with that kernel version and could associate with an AP, but was not able to ping at all. what was your experiences under 2.6.12-rc4?

It has windows driver that seems to be written with ndis, so should work with ndiswrapper(on x86 obviously), but the chipset don't appear in the list of the supported one.

i have a very cheap wlan-usb-stick with that zd1211 chipset. I got it working with the drivers out of cvs without problems / kernel 2.6.11-r6. I have set up a batch-file to start wlan:

ifconfig eth0 down
modprobe zd1211_mod
ifconfig wlan0 up
ifconfig wlan0 <ip>
iwconfig wlan0 essid <name_of_the_network>
iwconfig wlan0 key restricted <key>
route add default gw <ip>

the drivers out of portage didn't do it for me ........

well, it's normal, the driver don't have to do this. If you use hotplug you can avoid to manually load zd1211.

basically I think ndiswrapper will never work on ppc(this is ppc forums, I assume you have a ppc). You just need to emerge the zd1211 driver(that now shuold be ~ppc), it's not perfect, but is almost work.

zd1211 driver should work, ndiswrapper... maybe.
I've talked on #ndiswrapper, and seems that all driver written with ndis should work, but if the driver uses extra windows api there's no way get it working.
Try and report ;)

I had the same experience with the portage version of the drivers. I've had no problems with the cvs drivers and 2.6.12 kernel. I also don't do anything special for the zd1211 modules as far as configuration scripts, everything is set up in /etc/conf.d/wireless and works great. (posting this through my Hawking HWU54G and 2.6.12 now)
