when I try to emerge php 4.3.10 i get:

why is this?

Because you have at least one screwy setting in make.conf ?
Why does it say it's cross-compiling ?

Hmmm... is distcc truly disabled ? It cuts off before the end of the line.

Other than that, I would look it up in the bugzilla database - since you don't have test enabled why would he consider it a problem ?

finally i found the solution at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23751

but why it was a error in libwww i really don't know :)
