Is there a way to keep your ssh session open in the background when you close the putty terminal window or the connection is droped ?

Heard something about a 'screen' command but that doesn't seem to work.

Oh yes it does.
man screen, read about the detach command.
You have to detach your screen sesion to be able to log out of PuTTY.

Moved from Networking & Security to Duplicate Threads in favour of SSH: keep login active/Login to a previously started session.
