I'm a newbie to Gentoo and Linux. On comp.os.linux.misc I was advised to ask on Gentoo forums. So I do. Generally, I don't know if my (three) problems are connected with each other so I post them respectively to (probable suitable) forums: Installing Gentoo, Portage & Programming and Desktop Environments in hope that anybody who believe it can be true will check the others...
This post has a lot citeing from comp.os.linux.misc inside...

I've got (newly installed) Gentoo (installed Stage2). During
general emerging I've done also gcc and kernel (now it is 2.6.11-gentoo-r6).
My linux bootloader is lilo. All versions are latest - according to emerge
(portage synchronized vie internet few days ago). My USE make variable is
packed full of many things, which I found usefull.

I've installed "everything" (according to emerge...) -syste, tetex, kde, many fonts, other stuff - and it doesn't work.
The only result of startkde is writing on STDERR:

xsetroot: unable to open display ''
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
startkde: Running kpersonalizer...
DCOP: register 'anonymous-13139' -> number of clients is now 1

that I mercily stop with ^C.
startx gives (also only on STDERR):

judging from the line
Code:
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file
I suggest you try running
Code:
xorgconfig

What does work:

# USE="-hardened" emerge gcc
# emerge -C ccache
# emerge -C xorg-X11

in make.conf add to USE "-fPIC -pie"

# emerge xorg-X11

xorgconfig (USB mouse at /dev/input/mice, protocol Auto...)

Greetings.
