so I decided to be a real adventurer and download the minimal install cd for gentoo and go through the whole process of downloading/compiling/configuring the whole system. Ok, so maybe I shouldnt have decided to take on the whale with only a speargun as my weapon. Following the gentoo handbook (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=6) I get all the way to step 20 on that page before I run into a problem. During the execution of "emerg --emptytree system" it halts after about 10 minutes or so and gives this error message : "ERROR: sys-libs/ncurses-5.4-r6 failed. Function do_compile, Line 86, Exitcode 2, make failed" and in case you need to know, the line before that is
/bin/sh: line 1: -I../c++: no such file or directory
make[1]: *** [../obj_s/cursesf.o] Error 127
make[1]: Leaving directory 'var/tmp/portage/ncurses-5.4-r6/work/narrowc/c++'
make: *** [all] Error 2

so I assume for whatever reason the ncurses compile is failing. However, being a linux noob, I have no idea what my options are at this point. I would think that I could remove the ncurses package from the emerge list and be able to continue with my system build right? if so, how do I do that? Or is there a way to fix whatever is causing this problem so that I can use ncurses?

also, in case its needed, here are my USE options: apm, avi, X, acpi, crypt, ctype, cups, curl, curlwrappers, dio, divx4linux, doc, dv, dvd, dvdr, dvdread, emul-linux-x86, encode, esd, ethereal, fdftk, flac, freetds, freetype, ftp, gd, geoip, gif, glut, gnutls, gphoto2, gstreamer, gtk, gtk2, gtkhtml, iconv, icq, ieee1394, imap, imlib, iodbc, ipv6, jabber, java, javascript, jikes, jpeg, kde, kerberos, ladcca, lcms, ldap, lesstif, libg++, libwww, lm_sensors, mad, memlimit, mmap, mmx, mono, motif, mozilla, mp3, mpeg, mpi, msn, msql, mssql, mysql, mysqli, ncurses, nis, odbc, ogg, oggvorbis, openal, opengl, osc, oscar, oss, pcmcia, pcntl, pda, pdflib, perl, png, portaudio, ppds, python, qt, quicktime, readline, samba, sasl, sdl, sharedmem, simplexml, slp, snmp, soap, sockets, socks5, source, ssl, svga, szip, tcltk, tcpd, tetex, theora, threads, tiff, truetype, unicode, usb, v4l, vcd, videos, vorbis, wifi, win32codecs, wmf, xine, xml, xml2, xmlrpc, xmms, xpm, xprint, xv, yaz, zlib

Please provide the output of
Code:
emerge info

so we can take a look at your system settings.
(Yes, that would also have saved you typing over all those USE flags...)

during the install from my previous post I forgot the specify the acpi=on kernel option on the cd boot so the laptop shut itself off during the night and I have since restarted the install.

So after 3 install attempts I finally manage to make it past the kernel build.http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2005.0/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=9. However, when I try to execute the "emerge syslog-ng", I get errors. The following is my emerge info (oddly enough its the same as my previous install attempts).

Code:
Portage 2.0.51.19 (default-linux/x86/2005.0, gcc-3.3.5, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.11-gentoo-r3 i686)
System uname: 2.6.11-gentoo-r3 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50Ghz Gentoo Base System Version 1.4.16
Python: dev-lang/python-2.3.4-r1 [2.3.4 (#1 Mar 10 2005, 18:18:11)]
dev-lang/python: 2.3.4-r1
sys-apps/sandbox: [NOT PRESENT]
sys-devel/autoconf: [NOT PRESENT]
sys-devel/automake: [NOT PRESENT]
sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r1
sys-devel/libtool: [NOT PRESENT]
virtual/os-headers: 2.6.8.1-r2
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86"
AUTOCELAN="yes"
CLFAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu"
CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control"
CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles"
FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms strict"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages"
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
USE=" the default use flags, I didnt change any this time.  For a stage1 build."
Unset: ASFLAGS, CBUILD, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

and the error message I get is similar to the previous one.
Code:
ERROR app-admin/syslog-ng-1.6.7 failed.
Function src_compile, Line 32, Exitcode 2
emake failed

If that is not the information you want regarding the error itself, then you'll have to tell me how to "scroll" up on the console because I cant see it.

Edit : just for kicks I skipped the step for installing a system logger and went to install a file system toolkit (emerge xfsprogs). It downloads 2 packages, the first compiles fine, but on the 2nd it errors saying: "FATAL ERROR: libtool does not seem to be installed. xfsprogs cannot be built without a workign GNU libtool installation." How is it possible that I could make it this far in an install without having this error show up sooner?

Using the "emerge --resume --skipfirst" command on the install of the addition packages I wanted, worked well. My only concern is what exactly does this command do? does it resume after the last error and try the compile again or does it simply skip over it?

It just skips over it and continues with whatever was to come next. It's useful when something like emerge -e system fails and you don't want to start over again from the beginning. Keep in mind, however, that if something else depends on the package you skip, then it too will fail.

IIRC --skipfirst does not work in conjunction with the --emptytree command. :wink:

I'm looking for a solution that actually solves the problem, as using emerge --resume --skipfirst does not appear to installing the right set of files...

When I look in the compile folder for this, all the correct info is there, and the folder is properly located, so I'm not sure why this is happening

Any help would be apreciated as I just upgraded my main system to double it(doubled ram to 2gig, doubled processors to 2x2800+MP's, doubled harddrive to 400Gb) and really would like to take it for a stretch now.

Edit: Found a solution using better search terms https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-299349.html seems to be it.

Thanks

JC
