You should set the boot flag on the partition that is used for booting linux (/boot)
I am pretty sure that this cannot be same partition as winxp...

Sorry, of course it is another partition, I just wanted to point out that winxp is on hda1. /boot is on hda3...
Did I understood right, that hda3 should be marked with the bootable flag?
Thanx!!!

Grub and lilo don't care about bootable partitions. If grub/lilo is installed to the mbr, then bootable partitions are ignored.

Windows, though, needs to be marked bootable. Like if you removed linux and reset the mbr to default but your windows partition wasn't marked bootable, then windows will never boot. That's because the default mbr simply searches for a bootable partition and then releases booting to that partition.

So you don't need to mark any linux partitions bootable.
