I've searched and it seems that a fair number of people have had this problem.
Doesn't sound like anyone has a solution.

I emerged limewire, ran it once and it worked. but then it just hangs at the startup screen. Deleting ~/.limewire doesn't help and I've delete ~/Incomplete and ~/Shared. I have IBM java (is there any alternative for PPC-linux?) and it seems to work fine with the two other java apps I use.

I have a different problem - limewire doesn't accept keyboard input. Other java apps do, except sometimes they need to be minimised and restored.

Removing .limewire has no effect.

Poor linux testing...

I have resorted to running limewire under OS X in MOL. Seems to work ok there. Inconvenient, but I don't use lime wire so much that it's a big deal. From a purely end-user perspective, I hate java--on all platforms. (Windows, OS X, Linux, and Qtopia) A java app is not one I would like to rely on for anything important. When I see an app is developed in java, three things come to mind: 1. slowness, 2.flakiness, 3. I have the wrong (SUN/IBM/Blackdown/others?) JDK/JRE
4. Better google for a java-free something to do the job. 5. Doh! why is the JDK I need not available for my arch. 6. oops that's more than 3 things.

I think I have limewire working but I have not idea why this works.

Delete your ~/.limewire and ~/.java folders

cd /opt/limewire

run limewire like this:

sh ./runLime.sh

Just deleting the hidden folders doesn't work for me. Just typing limewire doesn't work either. I tried this method three times in a row and limewire started quickly every time. (Of course you have to re-enter your language and sharing prefs which is a little cumbersome.)
