i get an error when performing the command "emerge --emptytree system". i've followed the gentoo handbook up to here, but im a bit stuck (ive looked around in google for a good while before coming here, and im not a complete linux noob... close to it though).

anyway, when emerging/compiling/whatever its doing, it gets to the openssl-0.9.7 package doover thing, downloads and checksums fine, applys various patches ok, says the following

>>> Source Unpacked.
Operating system: i686-whatever-linux2
You need Perl 5.

!!! ERROR: dev-libs/openssl-0.9.7e-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 158, Exitcode 1
!!! config failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

ive posted the status message (well, i think i have) because i dont know what else to post. im running an athlon xp, GA7N400 Pro2 (nForce 2 chipset) motherboard, radeon 9800 pro. i had to use the agpgart and noapic arguments to get my LiveCD to boot, if that tells anyone anything. my CFLAGS are the defaults outlined in the Gentoo handbook, and ive added what i *think* are all the use flags i need.

so, what gives?

Could be a dependency problem. Try emerging perl, then re-doing the emerge -e system·

Do you have Perl installed?
Code:
emerge -p perl

It seems that the emerge -e system is not doing a good job with dependencies.

Hi all

I have the same problems when i try to emerge system (emerge -e system)

I try to emerge perl (emerge perl) and at the 4 emerge of 94 for the ebuild perl, i have an another problem :

ERROR : media-libs/svgalib-1.9.19-r3 failed
Function kernel-mod-configoption_builtin, Line 144 Exitcode 1
kernel has not been configured yet

Why this error? and how can i resolve it please?
Thanks for answers

sorry, i shouldve noted that i tried "emerge perl" (no -p flag though, whats it do?) and got the same result as gentoo_power did. i think i might try a stage3 install, having read another read on the pros and cons of each stage... we'll see.

Hi.

emerge -p ... shows what emerge would do. The point here is to know whether it would reinstall Perl 'R' or if it would install it 'N'.
The error you point out with svgalib occurs because you didn't compile the kernel yet. Go to the /usr/src/linux dir and do a make menuconfig and exit the config. It should be enough.

OK, now get rid of them, and put USE="" in /etc/make.conf while you are emerging the base system.

Once you have a base Gentoo installation that can boot without the LiveCD, then add all the USE flags that you want.
