I have gentoo installed on a K6-III and have arch set at "x86". While I use gnome, I wanted to install the KPPP dialer. emerge informed me that kppp 3.4.0 was masked by ~x86 keyword. I thought there probably wouldn't be much harm to anything else if I intalled a developmental version of KPPP only and keep the x86 as default for everything else.

So I attempted to do a temporary overide of x86 with

Code:
USE="~x86" emerge kppp

But I still got the same error message.

Ok then tried adding the following line to /etc/portage/package.use

Code:
kde-base/kppp ~86

But this didn't work. I can provide emerge --info output if needed. Suggestions?

Wrong file. Try adding that entry to package.keywords.
You will probably need to add some dependencies in there too.

And do not set USE on the command line. You'll get headaches from that.

Put it into /etc/portage/package.keywords instead.

Now lets adress the errors one at a time:
Quote:
Code:
USE="~x86" emerge kppp

There is no ~x86 use flag. There is a ~x86 keyword.
Quote:
Ok then tried adding the following line to /etc/portage/package.use

Same as above.
Quote:
Code:
kde-base/kppp ~86

~86 is neither a use flag nor a keyword.

You really should read the relevant handbook sections.
