ok I wanted to reinstall gentoo due to that I gave way to much space for swap and /boot like 5GB
so I figure since I was able to install it without no problem thannks to genkernel and a really good install guide, so I recreated my partition table which is setup like
/dev/hda1 /XP partition
(somehow lost another partition that XP use's I think)
/dev/hda2 /root
/dev/hda3 /swap
/dev/hda4/ boot

now when I boot into grub I can't even boot in XP(but I think I killed the XP too now cause I use to see two(win95 LBAsomething partition for XP and only see one now) I get the splashscreen and after it loads the screen goes all distored, but I can only read it out. this is my grub.conf

default 0
timeout30
splashimage=hd0,3) /grub/splash.xpm.gz

title-gentoo
root (hd0,1)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r9 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_boot=/dev/hda3 udev
initrd /initrd-2.6.11-gentoo-r9

title=xp
root(hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Read the sticky on grub error code and im getting error code 15 but when I try to run grub-install gives me a error no command found

When I choose to boot in XP it just brings me back to left hand corner cusor and gives me this erorr again

root (hd0,1)
filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r9 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_boot=/dev/hda3 udev
Error 15: File not found
Press any key

I have a Dell 17 inc LCD and I really didnt understand how to enter the code in

Your entry for the splash is wrong. It should be:
Code:

splashimage=(hd0,3) /grub/splash.xpm.gz

You missed a '('.

Your entry for the timeout is wrong. It should be:
Code:

timeout 30

You missed a '<blank>'.

Your entry for Gentoo is wrong. So it should work with:
Code:

title=gentoo
root (hd0,3)
kernel /kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r9 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda2 udev
initrd /initrd-2.6.11-gentoo-r9

1.
'root (hd0,3)' specifies the partition or starting point, from where the follwing paths are read relatively. Or, to say it easy, it's the Grub's root. So 'root (hd0,3)' is your /boot, and /kernel-2.6... means then (translated) in your real filesystem /boot/kernel-2.6...

2.
It's 'real_root', not 'real_boot'.

3.
Your real root is /dev/hda2.

4.
Its 'title=gentoo', not 'title-gentoo'.

Try to modify your entry for WindowsXP (TM) like this:
Code:

title=xp
root (hd0,0)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

You missed a '<blank>' in 'root (hd0,0)'. And add 'rootnoverify (hd0,0)'.

Code:
kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r9 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_boot=/dev/hda3 udev
Error 15: File not found

You probably have kernel image that is named differently than what you put in grub.
When grub returns the error 15 press e to edit. Then use the tab completion feature to select the right partitions and files.

from grub documention:
Code:

When typing commands interactively, if the cursor is within or before the first word in the command-line, pressing the <TAB> key (or <C-i>) will display a listing of the available commands, and if the cursor is after the first word, the <TAB> will provide a completion listing of disks, partitions, and file names depending on the context. Note that to obtain a list of drives, one must open a parenthesis, as root (.
