I'm reinstalling Gentoo (for the up-teenth time), because I love it and can't get away...

The only problem is that I use the S-Video out a lot for playing movies/games on my TV (mostly old recorded MST3K episodes), and the ATI 9000 Mobility's S-Video out is 'closed' to the linux world.

Well.. I found this nifty DVI to S-Video adapter on Apple's site (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9267G/A. Listed as only working for Mac-mini and G5s (although... you'd think that a DVI connection would be the same between G5s and G4s... or else it wouldn't be called DVI).

If I were to purchase this doo-dad, do you think it's possible to do S-Video out via the mirrored DVI interface?

(Also.. if anybody HAS this doo-dad and a G4 w/ DVI laying about, it'd be cool to see if it worked so I wouldn't waste my precious college-student's salary on a dead-end... I wouldnt' expect OS X or Gentoo to be any different... unless DVI is an entirely different beast than what I'm used to).

Thanks in advance
-Justin

it probbably works for powerbooks too. the main problem is that no one found a working modeline yet to get this one working on linux, or at least.. i didnt come across any. on my mini the adapter plays nicely along with os x but i was not succesfull under linux at all. the picture is black and white and heavily distorted. it may be that the pixel clock of the card's bios is reported wrong or something(?). but until someone explains why or help us out i think you are in bad luck at the moment. maybe apple build in some nice secrets into the adapter? :-(

Hmm.. okay.

Then maybe I'll look for another DVI to S-Video adapter...

Or even a VGA to S-Video.

Doesn't really matter... it's a work-around ;-)

Hmm... VGA to S-Video 'converters' are sold as 'boxes' for like $199...

I DO have an external firewire dazzle-box (converts everything to everything video-wise, except for DVI and VGA!!!)

Maybe I'll monkey around with that, for awhile.
