how do i unmask something that has been masked by ~x86 keyword

you have to modify your /etc/portage/package.keywords
here's an example:

pd mnt # cat /etc/portage/package.keywords
net-p2p/amule ~x86


don't forget to put the full app-name in there <appgroup/application> like i did above.
if you don't know the full name, use emerge -s to search for your package.
don't use version numbers.

Put the package in your /etc/portage/package.keywords (yes, you may have to create that directory first). See man portage for example.
