* Caching service dependencies...
* Cannot add provide 'authdaemond', as a service with the same name exists!

Not only is the grammar wrong, but I have no idea what to do to fix this! This shows up every time I merge anything. Any ideas?

Thanks

Could be you have more than one init script providing "authdaemond" or you have more than one symlink to the init script that provides authdaemond.

Do a "grep authdaemond /etc/init.d/*" to see if more than one script wants to provide this service. Then do either "ls /etc/runlevels/*" or "ls /etc/runlevels/* | grep $SERVICE" to see if there is more than one symlink to the init script providing authdaemond. Fill in $SERVICE with the name of the init script(s) that is providing authdaemond found in step 1.

courier-imap/authlib had left authdaemond in /etc/init.d.

I removed it manually. However there are still a load of courier-imap/authlib things on my system even after I unmerged it! :(

I had this problem also, because:

I had authdaemond AND courier-authlib both providing authdaemond. (inside my /etc/init.d/ scripts)

I also had both services in my default runlevel. Since I want courier-authlib, and it provides authdaemond, I don't need to start authdaemond by itself. So, I removed it: # rc-update del authdaemond default

This happened because I share sysadm with my bro, and I used etc-update without knowing the implications, (rtfm):D.

Hope this helps someone, I know it helped me.
