Hi,

I'm doing a stage 1 install from CD on an x86 system. I'm trying to follow the handbook, but I keep having some errors.

The first problem occured when I started the bootstrap script. It was something like "cannot compute suffix for object files. Cannot compile". A forum search showed this solution: "ln -s /usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3.5-20050130/gcc /usr/bin/gcc", which helped. But I still have the feeling that I forgot something until here. What's going wrong?

Now for the second error, for which I don't yet have a solution: "emerge --emptytree system" first stopped at ncurses (complaining about g++. Again I created a symlink ...). The second time I called emerge --emptytree system it stopped at openssl after unpacking the sources:

>>> Source unpacked.
Operating system: i686-whateer-linux2
You need Perl 5.

!!! ERROR: dev-libs/openssl-0.9.7e-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 158, Exitcode 1
!!! config failed

I don't have any idea why there should be an installation of perl on my system even before installing the system packages ... can anyone help, please?

Surprise, I've already tried that. Not surprisingly, emerge fails at the first of 118 packets to install. Keep in mind that I'm at an early stage of the installation:

!!! ERROR: media-libs/svgalib-1.0.19-r3 failed.
!!! Function kernel-mod_configoption_builtin, Line 114, Exitcode 1
!!! kernel has not been configured yet

USE="-*" emerge -e system usually helps prevent a lot of these problems
