Hi,
I just got done installing gentoo 2000.5 (stage3) and everything went great. The installation docs were right on the money.
BUT...
After rebooting I had no problems until I tried to do a "emerge --update world" and then it terminated halfway thru and then 'emerge' is now screwed. The error is something to do with Python and then I tried to run the python executable and it complains about a library. So since I have done absolutly everything as the installation said, up until the --update it can't be my problem. So I am going to reinstall gentoo but I need to figure out why my update messed things up so I don't have to be afraid to do an update...

perhaps you could give us some more specific error messages...It's hard to help when the problem is this vague.

You don't need to reinstall Gentoo, please see this thread:

Yeah the error was something like:
Quote:
"error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

That above link sounds like it was the exact problem I had... I have already installed gentoo again (well I guess I am just now compiling the kernel again)
So in any event I see I am not alone, but I still wish I knew why it happened?

During my search for answers I did come across a post that said something like: you always need to do an "emerge -up world" before you do a "emerge -u world" to avoid errors. And it rambled on as to why the person thought that and yadda yadda yadda...

Is there any truth to that?

Haven't read that specific post, but the 'p' switch just allows to see what portage is planning to emerge.

It happens because portage was by default only building things for C and not including C++ in it's basic build. So all the C++ related stuff in gcc wasn't being built.

For a fix go to:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85490
And check out "Comment 36"... it seemed to be the most straight-foward.
