I use mplayer, it don't need a graphical Front-End (but you can enable it), and it works for all video/audio formats supported natively by GNU/Linux and the win32codecs (so if a file won't play, it's really exotic)

Yes, I have to agree regarding mplayer... I never have any problem with mplayer so far wheather it's avi, mpeg, wmv, ogg, bin, etc.

i'm using xine atm but planning to try mplayer since xines bothers me from time to time...

whether you use xine or mplayer or whatever is just a question of personal taste, give them all a try and pick up the one that suits you best

don't worry about the file format supported, they all the support any format as long as they know where is the codec to decompress it
as long as you add "win32codecs" to your USE flags, it should work fine...

I'm using both xine and mplayer.
Normally i would use mplayer but as i have a somewhat buggy audio driver (ATI IXP) is sometimes starts skipping and doing other weird stuff. Xine doesn't have any problems with so i use this if a movie starts skipping.
So personally i would prefer mplayer but xine does the job to. So if something is acting weird in mplayer try xine and the other way around.

My mplayer says that there are too many packets in the buffer when trying to play a dvd, so mplayer for video files, but xine's great dvd support for dvd's

BTW, how do I get xine to play a series of VIDEO_TS files that arn't burned on a dvd? (Menus & all)
