I just saw this at the end of my last emerge world:
Code:

--------------------------- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY ---------------------------
LOG FILE = "/tmp/sandbox-media-gfx_-_eog-2.10.0-2184.log"

It means that the install script of EOG tried to write to files outside of the Portage sandbox. It's an issue with the ebuild and not your system.

Same here. Have a look at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-345686-highlight-scrollkeeperdocs.html which seems to point the way towards a couple of solutions.

After just updating world these are mine that had the same problem.

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] mail-client/evolution-2.2.1.1 [2.0.4]
[ebuild U ] app-arch/file-roller-2.10.0-r1 [2.8.4]
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/gnome-media-2.10.0 [2.8.0]
[ebuild U ] gnome-extra/gcalctool-5.5.41 [4.4.22]
[ebuild U ] app-text/gpdf-2.10.0 [2.8.3]

It's nice to know that it's a problem with the ebuild.

Is there some way to update using ebuilds that have only been released long enough to have these kinds of problems fixed?
My time for playing with Gentoo is limited and I am still on the steep uphill side of the learning curve and it seems that I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out why updates and other emerges fail.

Code:
emerge --sync

Today, it seems they fixed a lot of problems involving gnome.

Following the link from The Ennead I opted for #SANDBOX_DISABLED=1 emerge foo for each of my offending ebuilds and all worked.

Thanks.

By the way my last emerge --sync was about three hours ago and the problems were still there. Glad to see that they're on top of it. My question remains as to why I experience so many of these update problems in the first place.

You probably recieve these update problems because you are running "~x86". Change it to "x86" in your /etc/make.conf (if you are on an x86 platform that is).

It's good to know that it is a problem with the ebuild and not my system. I was fearing that my filesystem was damaged or something.

Thanks for the fast replies.:D

Don't disable your sandbox, it might seriously hurt your system. Sandbox violations are bugs and need to be fixed. I think this bug is already fixed in portage, if not please search bugs.gentoo.org for the according bugreport.

This problem has nothing to do with ~x86, all these problems are with packages that are x86.

Xamindar,

The packages that I had trouble with are stable not masked.

The extent of my package.keywords.

Code:
#From the vlc website
media-video/vlc ~x86

#Correction from an emerge --pretend dependency
media-plugins/live ~x86
dev-libs/libcdio ~x86

#From emerge world
media-video/ffmpeg ~x86
media-libs/a52dec ~x86
media-libs/libsdl ~x86

#To get Adobe Acroread 7
app-text/acroread ~x86

And in package.mask I have
Code:
#To limit the vlc package to the one in use. Remove when it becomes unmasked.
>media-video/vlc-0.8.1-r2

I suppose I need to add Acroread, because 7 is good enough for me.

libsdl it seems was to support Frozen Bubbles and the others were for VLC, in any case when the versions that I am using are unmasked I will remove them from package.keywords. In the future I will better comment my additions so that I don't forget why I had made them in the first place. I did not unmask them on a whim but because I considered those few packages essential. It would be fun to have a box for stable and another for running the more current but masked versions of my favoite packages but I'm not there.

amne,

I suppose just a regular emerge for the packages that I merged without sandbox will restore them?

Thanks.

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads in favour of https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-346138.html as it doesn't contain any advice on disabling the sandbox even if the sandbox is far from perfect.
