as apple plan to use some intel p4 processor(confirmed by apple's director at the keynote)
will the ppc architecture disapear if the intel chips becomes a commercial succes
ppc reselers:
-ibm(too expensive)
-apple (i don't know how long they will be disponible)
-game cube(too slow or clustering cheep but consume too much power)
-others worksations that are more expensive that apple and less that ibm and not so powerfull
-ps3

the problem is that the G5 vs X86
+more superscalar
+performance a lot better than x86 systems with the vectorisation of the code (this start to be implementes in GCC 4 since a not very long time)
+a lot of unoptimised(yet) part in the processor that could bring a lot of performance if optimised as the latency with the ram
(http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2436)
+mac-os not well obtimised have a lot more power in linux
+was cheaper in apple computer

in the top500 they have a very high power per processor
number 7 with only 1100 Dual 2.3 GHz Apple XServe and infiniband
and they have mac-os wich is a bottleneck...

but now i was wondering ablout the future of some project as darwine(darwine not darwin(windows emulation, port of wine under mac-os with some x86 emulation, works only in darwinX86))
and the availibility of such processor
(they were making too much concurence to ibm power workstations and server...)

Yes, im also very curious of what will PPC future be.
Apple was basically the one supporting PPC, and it was doing great things, creating great prices for very advanced computers like the small powerbook and ibook, and also the fastest comptuer of all time (very cheap for its power) the G5.
Where will all this stuff go? I mean companies like pegasos or others will not be able to invest in stuff like G5 and make it cheap.
I guess this really an ugly fact for the entire PPC world... I love PPC, but Apple is growing and also their hardware needs innovation, thats why they chose Intel.

the problem with x86 processor are the folowing:
*too much power consumation/power(mflops etc...)
for example building a cluster or having a very powerfull pc that works 24h/24 lead to some problems... they have a very high cost per year
*thread switching problem:
-or there is a too big time for switchimg a thread
-or it's a p4 hyperthreading with:
->too much heat
->bad software support(2 virtual processor instead of a lower level support)
->bad architecture mot very efficient
this is an enormous problem for speed there is a lot of cpu time that is wasted...by thread switching

*less stable than others architecture due to the poor multithreading capability(experienced...with some situations with x86 chips)

this is not good...
so anyone know an alternative for the future?
is LEON2 good(gpl sparc processor)?
how do we find this programable gate chips...

i was wordering...
what is better
1 or 2 G5
some ps3 (for the same price)
i've not enugh informations on the cell of the ps3...
but i've some info on the g5

i'd like to build a cluster(for an average of 1000$ but less if possible) for some mathematical calculations(mostly prime number like(not prime number calculations but the same type of calculations that include only integrer and calculate some coresponding table as for example 2^n+1=>large number amd some others calculations) and mabe a lot later some floating point calculations) and knowing the fact that
*mabe the g5 would desapear
*there is the ps3
-don't know anything on this
*there is the game cube
-consume 39W each...(for example is 10 unit as performant as a g5?)
-have a ppc750 Cxe with some activec instructions added
-have 24 MB of a 1t 10ns sd-ram
-have 16MB of 81MHz Dram
-cost less than 50$ on e-bay
*i think some x86 processor are not good because of power consumations for example 3 atlon64/sempron systems consume a lot
what is the beter solutions
and...could i play some game with cluster-computer???(i can't afford a game machine and a cluster...)
(with open-mosix)
or some apple
1 g5:
or a imac or a powermac
or more than 2 mac mini(not buying the mac-os and re-selling the cd-rom drives for some case moders that could want this cd insertion mecanism...)

or...
has someone get run linux on another processor(such an arm chip on an audo card or inside a home-made pci card) to run aplications on the main processor as a co-processor(to minimise the importance of thread switching (faster than a real-time linux but still some thread switch into the process that are run)

i've read about clustering so i know that a ethernet interface could be use for transmiting data...without the need of ip encapsulating that takes away a lot of bandwith
there is also the support for bonding in linux(2x10/100 nic becomes a 200 nic or 2x1000 become 2000) so need for huge switch...lol
but i was just wondering if therer was some suport for changing the uplink/downlink speed for example 200Mb/s downlink(2^n+1) and 2000Mb/s uplink and if it's possible to change it dynamicaly
