I coded much c++ when I used windows, Im not going to stop just because I switched OS. I need suggestions for a good editor, the only one I know of is emacs but that felt a bit... hardcore... somehow... a little to much keyboard shortcuts and stuff.

Although I could use nano but I want something with a little more meat on the bones... stuff like syntax highlight and automated tabbing.

Suggestions for good editors? Maybe I should say that Im _completely_ new to the linux world. Like it so far though. :)

I like to keep things (very!) simple, so I use kwrite. It does syntax highlighting and has a word completion plugin that works pretty well. No tabs though.

Nano has both syntax highlighting and auto-indent features, they're just not enabled by default.
Take a look at /etc/nanorc, or this forum thread.
Very handy if you want to do a little coding in an xterm or from the console.

For gui stuff, it depends largely on your environment. Most kde people swear by kdevelop, but they're using kde so what do they know .
For gtk editors, anjuta is very nice, but pulls in a lot of gnome dependencies if you don't already have them installed.
For gtk without gnome, bluefish is really nice, like Iron_DragonLord said. It may have been designed for html editing, but it can handle a lot more and seems lighter than anjuta.
For a really light gtk editor, try katoob.

Threads that mention both vi and emacs are likely to turn into a flamewar, so let's better concentrate the heat in threads like this ;-)

For more IDE concentrated threads see Favorite Editor for Programming for example and pretty much anything that comes up when searching for kdevelop and anjuta (or the others already mentioned here).

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads.
