The oddest thing occurs on my gentoo install - whenever I'm holding the mouse down and dragging windows, my music stops playing in xmms (haven't tested other music players).

Any ideas?

This is a known issue with the latest and greatest (non-kernel) alsa drivers. It has to do with the fact that the new version has a software mixer that takes a few cpu cycles more than it used to. So when you are doing something complicated, its possible that the audio buffer will underflow causing music to stop for a while.

This depends on your processor speed, video card speed (hardware or software drag?), and the kernel you use.

I have a p4-3.0-HT at work and when I would emerge something, run xmms, and move a browser window I'd get a stutter with kernel gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r9.

I switched to ck-sources-2.6.11-something or the other and its only suttered once while doing all the above and restoring a minimized Firefox. They will make it better over time as they optimize their code, I suspect...

First, make sure you are using good video drivers for your graphics card. Then try ck-sources if you can. (love sources have even better schedulers, they may work even better).

You could switch back to older alsa drivers, but then you'd be back to single audio output.
