I just have a question for the gentoo community. Everyone has been great about offering support so far and I wanted some opinions on what filesystem is best to use with gentoo in your opinions. Currently I'm using ext3 (good experiences with it and from what I hear it performs well) however I'm curious if there's a widely accepted fs that is known to be better? Any ideas or is what I am using the best as far as reliability and performance?

Some people (not me) have good experiences with ReiserFS, JFS, and XFS. There are many "which filesystem?" discussion threads though, which a search should find. I really love the Ext3 filesystem though. Take a look at my Ext3 Tweaking Guide if you're interested. :)

I have always been using ext3 for all my filesystems and haven't had any problem with it. In fact, the stupid power company took out the power yesterday afternoon and after it came back on, my machine boot without any trouble at all...

I like XFS alot; however, I have nothing to compare it to besides Reiserfs.

For fast machines, reiserfs usually offers the best balance.

If the machine has a slowish processor (< 1Ghz) then use ext3.

I used to always use Reiserfs but when I had a crash and found that there is more 3rd party recovery software (that I could find) that worked with ext2/3 filesystems but not with Reiser.

After that I used the Howto by codergeek42 and havent looked back. Tried and true ext3 for me

I have seen no difference in speed between ext3 (tweaked) and reiserfs with my 3100+ computer.

Plus: if your machine decides to kill itself, you can rescue-mount a ext3-harddrive as ext2 and use the decade-tested rescue tools to revive your data.
So while reiser and the others are faster (at least according to their respective advocates), the resuability of ext3 (read: ext2) seems to be better.

Personally I haven't used anything besides a very early version of reiser that crashed on me. Since that time I only use ext2 and ext3 (say 4 years?)
