I have the masked version of kde installed, 3.4.1. There are two different apps i wanna install, kcontrol and kdm (also version 3.4.1 masked). However, this is the output i get:

[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/khelpcenter-3.4.1)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdebase-data-3.4.1)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcminit-3.4.1)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kcontrol-3.4.1-r1)
[blocks B ] =kde-base/kdebase-3.4* (is blocking kde-base/kdm-3.4.1)
[ebuild N ] kde-base/khelpcenter-3.4.1
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kdebase-data-3.4.1
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kcminit-3.4.1
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kcontrol-3.4.1-r1
[ebuild N ] kde-base/kdm-3.4.1

I guess it just doesnt make sense to me why kde-base of the same version would be blocking these ebuilds. I could understand if it were a different version blocking them. Any clues as to how to get this working? thanks.

It makes sense because there are two different sets of KDE ebuilds - the monolithic ebuilds (kdebase, kdeedu, kdepim, kdenetwork, etc etc) which correspond to the tarball packages released by the KDE project, and the split ebuilds (konqueror, kcminit, khelpcenter, etc etc) which only compile the relevant part of each KDE package. You have kdebase installed, which is one of the monolithic ebuilds, and if you have one of those you can't also use the split ebuilds.
To fix this either emerge the monolithic package that contains kdm and kcontrol (I think that's kde-base/kdebase), OR alternatively unmerge your entire existing KDE installation and emerge kdm, kcontrol and what have you explicitely.
On a side note, each of the monolithic ebuilds also has a corresponding meta-package that pulls in all split ebuilds that used to be part of the monolithic tarball package, for example: kde-base/kdebase (monolithic) becomes kde-base/kdebase-meta (split); kde-base/kdepim (monolithic) becomes kde-base/kdepim-meta (split). Etc.
