In my experience it is esd. But I'm curious what experiences other people have had. My sound setup is pretty dodgily cobbled together by someone who doesn't know what they're doing(me).

Should one build KDE 3.4.1 -arts? I've been using gnome for a while but I'm getting curious so I emerged some KDE split ebuilds. In KDE 3.2/3.3 artsd was always crashing or hogging CPU.

I'm trying out KDE 3.4.1 (split ebuilds) with esd (-arts) and amarok/rhythmbox/xmms works pretty well. I can make the sound skip by doing goofy things such as resizing windows excessively and dragging huge windows around during playback, but overall playback is pretty solid.

I am confused about ALSA, I tried alsa-utils, but the initscript said there was something wrong with my kernel config and then all sound stopped working. So i just emerged esound and forgot about alsa-utils.

The quality is close to that of OS X, actually a little better considering it skips less and I can easily play ogg + flac. But I don't know what soundcard is built into my 12" G4 1.2GHz iBook. Can I do away with esd/arts? Does the card have hardware mixing?

Here's the relevant portion of my .config:
Code:

# Sound
#
CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_DMASOUND_PMAC=m
CONFIG_DMASOUND=m
#
# Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
#
CONFIG_SND=m
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m
CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=m
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m

# ALSA PowerMac devices
#
CONFIG_SND_POWERMAC=m

Here is the output of lsmod:

i`ve set up my sound with alsaconf. In kde 3.4.1 i had to disable the soundserver (arts) because it only got me headaches !!!!
With arts sound just works, but when i changed the volume the sound became crappy !!!
So i disabled the soundserver in the controllcenter, and now everything is working fine.
