I think its a bloody stupid post...Its not like he went and put every bit of his hard work and sold it all to microsoft and have them close the source for gentoo. He's just a man trying to make a living for him and his. Can't blame a man for that.

Right then.

jtmace, no offence, but you're an idiot (I think I just violated that "no name calling" rule too, my bad). Daniel Robbins can do whatever the fuck he wants to do. He founded Gentoo, yes, but he's since moved on. The fact that he's now under MS employ means nothing, unless you're going to be an idealistic linux zealot. If you are, please go and take a good look at the world around you, realize there is more than just Linux.

Am I happy Robbins is now working for MS? No, not really, I wish he could have gotten employed somewhere that would have been directly useful for Linux, like OSDL or perhaps the American government (or any major government, for the matter). Unfortunately, that's not how the dice were tossed, so now he's working for MS. Hopefully he makes the best of it, and in the meantime, I hope you (jtmace) go and get a life.

Btw, this doesn't influence Gentoo a single bit as drobbins has nothing to do with Gentoo for some time now (other than visiting IRC from time to time and running the store until recently). So please get a clue before making claims about Gentoo being "corrupted".

 to quote 'half-baked' - fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, your cool, FUCK YOU!!!

kill my account on this forum.. I opt to end all my Gentoo related activities OUT OF PRINCIPLE (call me RMS)..

And for the ones that called me an idiot, tests would prove you wrong

the ones who called me an idiot and a zealot. I believe YOU failed the 'no name calling' rule :P

I have been with gentoo since the very first slashdot post about Portage (and sorcerer or what ever it was called), i bet half of the people that flame me havent been running gentoo as long as I have..

Call me a zealot when I opt to also run Solaris 10 alongside Sarge.. at least Solaris never tried to not be commercial..

Solaris never tried to be commercial? WTF? What else is Solaris? It is a <commercial> operating system, closed-source (maybe not for long), and intended to make Sun money... Sounds like... Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, HP Unix, Irix, AS/400, etc.

As for Daniel going to Microsoft, so what? You get paid how you get paid. He did not "sell out" Gentoo. In fact, he withdrew completely and left the community to function on its own. Bless him. Hope he drops by time to time, but have fun at Microsoft! Stock options alone would make me grin... Gotta pay dem bills... Here come da judge... Here come da judge...

*edit - Once again... it is "you're an idiot," not "your an idiot." You may be smart; but, your grammar sucks. You're going to hate making grammatical errors sometime in the future when your new potential job hangs on the fact that your grasp of 10th-grade grammar kicks you in your own ass.

Why is everyone dog-piling on jtmace? I have to step in and say that, at least to some effect, I agree with him. Robbins isn't just trying to "make a living," he's working for Microsoft. Not Yahoo, not Adobe, etc., but Microsoft, the arch-enemy of linux and everything else open-source. While I'm not as flaming, raving angry as jtmace, I'm at least disappointed.

Still, if Genome is right and the Gentoo Foundation itself hasn't changed, and it continues to remain what it is today, I'll still use it without any guilt. I don't see any reason to dump my favorite distribution of linux because its long-stagnant founder sold his soul. Again, though, I'm disappointed and I'm sure many of you are too. Don't jump down jtmace's (or my :P ) throat just for being upset.

Your example is about siding with a king that quartered soldiers in civilians' homes and taxed citizens without representation. Robbins was thousands of dollars in debt and went to work for a successful, innovative company guilty of little more than unstable products and the occasional monopolistic business practices. As far as I can tell he didn't even damage Gentoo in the process. If he had sold all the IP to Microsoft, I could understand you being this upset, but come on, give the guy a break. Without him there would be no Gentoo.

Grats to him, he should have a nice pay check now.

His getting hired by Microsoft has absolutely nothing to do with Gentoo. Even the "principle" of dumping Gentoo because he "sold out" is absolutely stupid unless you were a Robbins fan-boy (still stupid...).

Why don't you wait & see what he does for Microsoft? The general job description says he's going in to help them understand linux/open source. Seems more like a "open-source consultant" role.

Right now it's mainly a choice between MS/Windows OR BSD/Linux/Open-source/etc.... MS is still all about $$$, but if they start making their software to work a bit better with some open-source solutions, then it should be a good thing. Less brainwashing of sys admins to use a 100% Microsoft network.

if you are using gentoo, solaris, or whatever because you hate microsoft you're using them for a very poor reason and are missing out on some of the real benefits others are here for.

Funny. I'm about to start a job doing testing of an xbox game for a few months at MS... AND I LOVE GENTOO.

And I hope that the contract will help me get a programming position at MS... AND I WILL VERY LIKELY STILL USE GENTOO.

Win your wars in your heads.. call me #$*@&^$ all the stupid symbols you want.. You will not be on my mind tommorow.. You will not influence the way i think.. You cannot win in my head, just as I cant win in your head..

Seeing as he describes his job as "helping Microsoft to understand Open Source and community-based projects." I can't see anything about this that isn't good. Just think what could happen if Microsoft started contributing to open source projects...or even ditch Windows to unite the world under the banner of Linux (haha yah thats pushing it)

I couldn't care less about your spelling and grammar, though it is atrocious.

It's everything else about your post that really sucks.

And I have no intention of influencing the way you think. My intention is to ignore you with extreme prejudice, starting now.

I'm actually having trouble accepting the shit I'm reading here. YES, jtmace said some stupid shit. YES, he's probably more of a fanatic than most of the others who posted against him. Regardless, it seems that I'm still the only one to admit that I, in part, agree with some of what he has to say. Moreso, he has to be on the defensive just for having an opinion. Probably the most shocking is that most of the posts I've seen in this thread aren't apathetic to Robbins; they aren't just accepting of Robbins. Many of you are actually CONDONING going to work for Microsoft. In a time in which software patents (by companies similar to and including Microsoft) are threatening absolute open-source EXTINCTION in Europe, many of you are actually condoning accepting employment by Microsoft.

As much as many of you are trying to discredit every single word jtmace has to say, your discrediting yourselves of any dignity as open-source supporters.

Sorry for the double-post, but change "your" to "you're" in the last line of my post before someone chews my ass out for it.
