I just bought a G3 PowerMac ( 350 Mhz ) off Ebay :)
I can boot from the 2005.0 live CD for PPC, but I can't see my hard disk. I was under the impression it would be /dev/hda. However all my partitioning tools complain that /dev/hda is read-only, and most refuse to run. Some will show me a partition map that looks like the Install CD ... ie /dev/hda is the cdrom. A quick check of 'dmesg' confirms that the kernel has detected the CDROM at /dev/hda. So where is my hard disk?

I opened the case and sure enough, the cables going to the CDROM and hard disk look exactly the same - both IDE. The thing still boots into the old Mac OS ( 8.something ) so the hard disk is definitely connected and working ( and loud ). Any tricks for getting a hold of my disk?

Is the harddisk maybe /dev/hdb? What does fdisk -l show you?

You probably got a B+W model, see this bug:

No. There are no more disks - only /dev/hda.

fdisk -l gives nothing at all.

After some more reading, it seems that other people were having this issue in 2003, and were told that the Live CD's kernel was missing support for these G3s. Perhaps it's been left off again?

You downloaded the module, insmoded it and still no drives?
