How to change the "Get Map" action for Thunderbird

0. Who needs this?
  • You use Thunderbird
  • You would like to use the "Get Map" feature for you address book contacts
  • You would like to use a map service other than mapquest

1. Close Thunderbird
This procedure involves editing the prefs.js file, which is overwritten by thunderbird on close, erasing any manual changes.

2. Append to prefs.js
Edit your prefs.js file (which should be found at: ~/.thunderbird/$PROFILENAME/prefs.js) to include:
Code:
user_pref("mail.addr_book.mapit_url.format",
"http://maps.google.com/maps?q=@A1%20@A2%2C%20@CI%2C%20@ST%20@ZI%20@CO");

The above example changes the service from mapquest to google maps. The variables used are:
  • @A1 == address, part 1
  • @A2 == address, part 2
  • @CI == city
  • @ST == state
  • @ZI == zip code
  • @CO == country

Changing to a service other than google maps is left as an exercise to the reader.

Alternatively, to remove the "Get Map" feature altogether, simply include:
Code:
user_pref("mail.addr_book.mapit_url.format", "");

3. Start Thunderbird
Thunderbird's addressbook should now utilize your personalized map function.

Acknowledgements:
I wouldn't have figured this out without Mozilla's hidden addressbook prefs page.

I ran into some issues trying this.

I didn't have integrated firefox with thunderbird so I added the following lines to the same pref.js file:

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.ftp","/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.http","/usr/bin/firefox");
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.https","/usr/bin/firefox");

Also,

the "get map" function went to google maps but at the default United States map not at the detailed location. Any ideas how to fix it:

so basically, it creates this url bu no detailed map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?=803%20Princeton%20Street%20Apt%20A%2C%20Santa%20Monica%2C%20CA%2090403-2250%20United%20States)

Any ideas how to fix this?
