Is it necessary to reinstall gentoo (every year or more)?
I really dont want to, cause im so happy with my system, I dont wanna mess it up :!:
Is there really big upgrades from 2005.0 -> 2005.1 or 2005.0 -> 2006.0.. that cant be resolved without reinstalling?

No! Thats why im surprised so many advanced gentoo users (usually see them on irc) get a fresh install like every so often.

I do an `emerge --emptytree world` every now and then, but that's more to help with debugging ebuilds, not because my systems would need it. I can't think of a good reason to reinstall Gentoo once it's set up, other than profound boredom and a lack of better ideas what to do on a rainy day. There was the changeover from gcc 2.95 to gcc 3 back in 2002, but that was the last time I even considered a reinstallation - and didn't do it in the end because the update scripts provided were dealing with that just fine.

Bet most of us never got to install just once ....

Had to re-do it when first installing, don't plan on doing it again.

I don't install often.

Actually if my current Gentoo installation would break (as in I couldn't fix it) and my backup image wouldn't work either, I am not sure if I would install Gentoo for the short term again. I like Gentoo but it's a very time consuming beast and currently I just couldn't affort to spend at least a whole day or two to install und configure everything. I would probably install Fedora or Ubuntu, something which is done quickly and mostly just works out of the box.
