PostPosted: Thu Jun 16, 2005 7:12 am    Post subject: can no longer update my box Reply with quote

Hi all,

I've got a strange problem since a few days now. I can no longer update my box. EVERY ebuild that relies on the gcc compiler does not work anymore. The error message is different with each package. Some complain about not being able to "execute 'as'", others (like sudo) say

Quote:
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

!!! Please attach the config.log to your bug report:
!!! /var/tmp/portage/sudo-1.6.8_p8-r3/work/sudo-1.6.8p8/config.log

!!! ERROR: app-admin/sudo-1.6.8_p8-r3 failed.
!!! Function econf, Line 485, Exitcode 0
!!! econf failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

Could it be, that my second hard drive is starting to fail? It's a 13GB Fujitsu-Siemens drive. BTW: The Kernel has problems (from the beginning, I think) to access that drive in UDMA-Mode. The /usr and /usr/portage directory are located on that drive. Some time ago I had a problem with java, which stopped working. I could fix that by reemerging, but now: I can't fix a corrupt compiler. Or is it possible to replace the compiler with the one of the Live-CD? When yes, how do I do it without compromising anything? Is it sufficient to replace /usr/bin/gcc ?

Here the config.log file for sudo:

Quote:
This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by sudo configure 1.6.8, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.57. Invocation command line was

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --with-secure-path=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.4.4:/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.08/bin:/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.08/jre/bin:/opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.08/jre/javaws:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.4/sbin:/usr/kde/3.4/bin:/usr/kde/3.3/sbin:/usr/kde/3.3/bin:/var/qmail/bin:/var/vpopmail/bin --with-editor=/bin/nano --with-env-editor --without-insults --without-all-insults --with-pam --without-skey --with-ldap
