whenever I try to do an emerge I get the same error:

localhost ~ # emerge mirrorselect
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 2) net-analyzer/netselect-0.3-r1 to /
>>> md5 files ;-) netselect-0.3-r1.ebuild
>>> md5 files ;-) netselect-0.3.ebuild
>>> md5 files ;-) files/digest-netselect-0.3-r1
>>> md5 files ;-) files/digest-netselect-0.3
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) netselect-0.3.tar.gz
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking netselect-0.3.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/netselect-0.3-r1/work
>>> Source unpacked.
gcc -Wall -I. -g -O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -c -o netselect.o netselect.c
gcc: installation problem, cannot exec `as': No such file or directory
make: *** [netselect.o] Error 1

!!! ERROR: net-analyzer/netselect-0.3-r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 33, Exitcode 2
!!! emake failed
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.

My /etc/make.conf looks like this:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
USE=""
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"
#PORTAGE_BINHOST=
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
CCACHE_SIZE="2G"
CONFIG_PROTECT="-*"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
FEATURES="ccache fixpackages"

WANT_AUTOCONF=2.5

any ideas...anyone?

Moved from Portage & Programming to Duplicate Threads. Please see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-319555-highlight-gcc+exec+directory.html

Also, please remove CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" from your make.conf before you lose /etc/fstab and other important config files.
