I started out with 2.6.10-r6, but after reading up on some things, mainly sleep support, I decided to update. So, I did emerge -u world, which among other things, upgraded my kernel to 2.6.11-r11. When I rebooted, everything seemed to be going smoothly. It booted normally, and went into GDM. I typed in my user name and password, then it showed the gnome splash screen, the one with the gentoo and gnome logos that it shows when it's starting up. However, it won't get past there. Any ideas as to what could be going wrong?

First of all, emerging a new kernel does not mean the new kernel will be used for the next reboot. It just installs the sources. If you do not compile and install a new kernel you keep your old 2.6.10-r6. The question is more about what you updated with emerge -u and whether you had to update some scripts after that.

well if the problem is GNOME try re-emergin GNOME...
for the kernel, you need to setup /etc/yaboot.conf (bootloader) to boot into the new kernel..
read the PPC handbook.

Figured it out... the problem was in a couple of config files. :P
