I use

hdparm -d1 -m16 -c1 /dev/hda

Make sure the highest dma mode is used, which should be udma5, or use

hdparm -d1 -m16 -c1 -X udma5 /dev/hda

My hd temperature is in the range of 45-50 C, depending on external temperature.

Good question! Temptool will do it under OS X, but I didn't know there was a way to monitor it in linux. How do you do it?
